Location / Whats nearby / local attractions?

The Alhambra, one of the most important monuments of Europe, is just a 2 minute bus ride away from us. It is best to reserve in advance over www.alhambratickets.com since it gets really busy and there is a dayly quota for visitors into the Palace area. You find our hostel in the middle of Granada’s most exciting quarter, the Albaizyn with its narrow streets, white-washed houses and its ancient spirit where you can wander around for hours finding small relicts from the past like Moorish bathhouses,Plaza Larga (morning veg market) mosques or converted churches and some stunning views from San Nicolas, Mirador de la Lona or San Cristobal overlooking the Alhambra and the city. Just 10 minutes walking from the Sacromonte one of the cradles of Flamenco and with its caves and the Sacromonte Abbey with catacombs. For the more Catholic part of the city, you should check out the Cathedral of Granada. Visit for free El Bañuelo (old arab baths) or enjoy the experience at the new ones "Hamman". Life concentrates around the main square, Plaza Nueva, where people have coffee in the morning and tapas during the night. Visit Calle Elvira where more great tapas bars, flamenco bars and night clubs are located or Navas Street (best locals tapas area)

Directions

From the bus or train station take bus number 3 or 33 to Gran via 1 stop, this is also known as the Cathedral stop. From there you can either come up walking or take by minibus 31.

WALKING from the Cathedral: Cross GRAN VIA Street and Exit the bus and walk back towards the intersection you just passed. You will be on a street called the Gran Via and at the end of the crossing will be a Caixa Bank. Cross Gran Via here and head into the street called CARCEL BAJA. Keep walking. Then, continue to walk up next street called CALDERERÍA NUEVA. You will be walking past many Arabic shops and restaurants. At the end of Caldereria Nueva there is a church and the Street name changes to 'CUESTA DE SAN GREGORIO'. Follow up this street until you reach an impressive orange moorish house called 'Carmen de la Media Luna'. Then turn to your left through 'MULADAR DE DOÑA SANCHA' and the first one to your right is Calle TIÑA (Makuto is in number 18). If coming with heavy wheel luggage we recommend to a taxi at Plaza Nueva since the streets are cobblestone (read instructions)

DURING JUNE + JULY 09 SOME STREETS WILL BE UNDER RESTORATION SO MINIBUS 31 (Albayzin minibus) WILL NOT REACH SANTA ISABEL. We recommend coming up walking from the Cathedral (10 minutes) but PLEASE: SEE MAP & DIRECTIONS BEFORE COMING!!! IN THE VERY OLD ALBAYZIN IS
EASY TO GET LOST!!

From the airport: Take the airport bus to Granada and get off in Gran Vía con Reyes Católicos stop,(city center, estimated time: 25 min.),which is also known as the Cathedral stop. From there follow upper instructions Walking from the Cathedral since minibus 31 is not reaching Santa Isabel La Real due to street restoration.

BY TAXI:
Ask the driver to take you to “Monasterio de Santa Isabel la Real”, which is the nearest place to Makuto where a taxi can arrive. It can cost you about 6-8 euros from Bus or Train St, and 30 euros from Granada's Airport depending on traffic. Calle Tiña is just in front of this Monastery. This option is highly recommended if coming with wheel chair or heavy luggage. Some rude taxi drivers might try to drop you at some other point easier for them, do not get down if the don’t let you at Santa Isabel La Real Monastery (cars can reach this point even with the streets restoration).

BY CAR:
From Málaga, take the ring road of Granada (Span.: 'circunvalacion'), and take the exit called Mendez Nunez and continue along the Avenida Fuente Nueva until you reach the Avenida de la Constitucion. There, at the light, go straight on into the Avenida de Madrid and take the
direction of Albayzin-Carretera de Murcia.
From Carretera de Murcia, you enter into the Albaycín through the Pages Street (Calle Pages), continue until
you arrive the Salvador Church (Iglesia del Salvador), once there go around the church into the Tomasas Street (Carril de las Tomasas), then take Camino Nuevo de San Nicolas, until you reach at least Santa Isabel la Real.
You should park in that street. To get to the house by car is not easy and it is difficult to find a place to park.
Calle Tiña is just in front of the Monastery Santa Isabel la Real.

Another option could be: park the car in the parking El Triunfo in the Avenida de la Consitucion. In this case,
turn to the right at the light mentioned above into the Avenida de la Constitucion and you will see the parking
after a few meters. You continue your way walking up or by taxi.

IMPORTANT if driving
The district of the Albayzín is protected by the UNESCO and the access by car is restricted. You should know that to get into the Calle Pages, you have to do it from 8-11 am or 14-20 pm. Otherwise the entrance is restricted to neighbors. There is no time limit to exit the old district.

I really cannot express how wonderful my stay at Makuto was. I would recommend this to anyone. When I first arrived, they showed me around and I immediantly wanted to make another reservation. I was sad to hear it was full but then later on there was an opening and they made room for me. I was very hungry when I came here and so Marta taught me and some other people here how to make Spanish tortilla and treated us to it at her own expense. They make some dishes here for purchase and it´s better priced than most restaurants and if you don´t want to eat here, they recommend places that have good prices and are local. There are instruments to use and movies to watch, a chill room, and the coffee is really good (always a plus). Lots of really nice people and staff, it truely feels like home. When the room wasn´t available to me for the extra day when Makuto was full, one of thestaff members even offered to let me stay at their house. Amazing experience. The place is located pretty central although it has a little bit of a climb up a small hill. Alhambra is close as well as other great places to see with great views. Very easy to find, which is great for travelers not used to the Spanish style narrow streets. They helped me with my Spanish and were able to speak many other languages to other guests. Absolutely loved it. I came alone without expectations and left with gaining new friends and great memories. Thanks so much, Makuto!
